PROTOR systems used to re-commission UK power station

October 2006

Fawley power station, situated in the New Forest on the south coast of the UK, is increasing its production of energy to meet the growing electricity demand. A mothballed turbine, which was made redundant 12 years ago, has now been restarted. By running two out of its four oil-fired units, the power station can now supply one and a half million homes - an extra half - with energy.

The unit at Fawley power station has been re-commissioned by RWE npower. As part of this project the PROTOR system at Fawley was expanded earlier this year to include monitoring for this unit. RWE have been using this main PROTOR system and also one of their PROTOR-mobile units to assist in the successful return to service of this unit.

About Fawley...

Fawley is an oil-fired power station. It is powered by heavy fuel oil. The station was built in the 1960’s and is located in Hampshire on the shire of Southampton Water. It began operation as a 2,000MW power station with four 500MW generating units. Two units closed during the 1990’s.

Fawley has the ability to generate 1,000MW of electricity for the National Grid System. This is enough power to meet the need of around 1 million people – equivalent to the working population of Hampshire.
